Las Cruces, New Mexico is THE place for space – as the home of Spaceport America, the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, the city also features clear views of starry night skies and the milky way and plenty of scenic outdoor spaces to explore. Due to the significant drop in countywide COVID-19 infection rates and the subsequent relaxation of public health orders, many of the area’s premier attractions, and tours have reopened to visitors.

Recently reopened attractions include:

Spaceport America Tours – For those curious about space travel and exploration, a visit to Spaceport America—the world’s first commercial spaceport—is a must. See the site of future commercial space travel and learn about New Mexico’s influence on the space industry. Tours have resumed on Saturdays. Groups are limited to 10, and all participants are required to wear masks. Advance registration is required at https://spaceportamericatour.com.

Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park – After exploring nearby historic Mesilla, visitors can get back to nature with wildlife viewing, bird watching, hiking and self-guided or ranger-led nature trails. The park is now open to all in-state and out-of-state visitors, Monday-Sunday from 7 a.m.–4 p.m.

New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum – Agriculture is a way of life in Las Cruces, where people have been growing food for over 4,000 years. Learn about these traditions and the history that shaped one of the Southwest’s leading foodie destinations. The Museum is open Monday–Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fort Selden Historic Site – Step back in time and explore the adobe structure that once served as Fort Selden for U.S. soldiers during the 1800s. On land originally inhabited by the Mogollon in around 400 A.D., the site was also a stop on the trade route of Juan de Oñate in the late 1500s. Fort Selden is open to visitors Wednesday–Saturday, 12–4 p.m.

Las Cruces Museum of Art - The Museum of Art hosts changing contemporary art exhibits and offers programs for visitors of all ages. The museum is currently open on reservation-only basis. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance.  Reservations may be made for the following hours: Tuesday–Friday, noon – 4:30 p.m. (last reservation at 4pm) or Saturday – 1-4 p.m. (last reservation at 3:30 p.m.).

In addition to newly reopened attractions, Las Cruces features a variety of hiking and biking trails for all skill levels—perfect for social distancing. While in town, visitors can also sample wines from the oldest wine-producing region in the nation and enjoy some iconic red and green chile from the region widely recognized as the chile capital of the world.
