Join us for a new retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Art, Gaspar Enríquez: Chicano Pride, Chicano Soul. Gaspar Enríquez is a nationally recognized Chicano artist from El Paso, Texas, who uses an airbrush to created hyper-realistic portraits. The exhibit is on view February 3 through May 6, 2023.
Gaspar Enríquez is a self-defined Chicano artist who has been at the forefront of the national Chicano art movement for over fifty years. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, he uses his hyper-realistic, airbrushed portraits to show the humanity of the El Paso Chicano community and the tensions they face when living in a two-culture environment. Enríquez’s Chicano heritage is a consistent thread that ties together his work, which reflects his life experiences, the urban environment, and the people of his hometown. His compassionate nature allows him to capture his subject’s humanity and forces the viewer to look deeply at his subjects.
Gaspar Enríquez was born in 1942 and raised in the Segundo Barrio of El Paso, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Art from University of Texas, El Paso in 1971 and a Master of Art from New Mexico State University in 1985. Enriquez was an art teacher at Bowie High School in El Paso for 32 years. Since his retirement, he has focused on his artwork and renovating adobe structures in the historic downtown of San Elizario, Texas. His artwork is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture, the El Paso Museum of Art, and other prominent institutions.
The museum is located at 491 N. Main St. and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday 9am to 4:30pm. There is no admission fee. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1. For additional information, visit the website at https://www.lascruces.gov/museums or call (575) 541-2137

The NMSU University Art Museum (UAM) is excited to announce the opening of Icons & Retablos: The Blessings of Christ on Home Altars in the Margie and Bobby Rankin Retablo Gallery at the UAM on the campus of NMSU. Guest curated by Dr. Elizabeth Zarur, this exhibition, created in collaboration with the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, Massachusetts, invites visitors to see devotional works iconic to both Catholic and Orthodox Christianity.
In these joint exhibitions, both the UAM and the Museum of Russian Icons will display portions of each other’s significant collections.
Concurrent running exhibitions at the UAM and the Museum of Russian Icons were curated by Dr. Zarur to explore these two styles of
devotion through diverse materials, themes, and artistic expressions.
The Museum of Russian Icons and the UAM are both caretakers of two important collections, portraying religious subjects which conform to theological guidelines and traditional iconography. The NMSU Art Museum houses the largest collection of Mexican retablos in the U.S. Meanwhile, the Museum of Russian Icons is the only museum in the U.S. dedicated to Russian icons, and houses the largest collection of icons outside of Russia. The UAM’s Icons & Retablos: The Blessings of Christ on Home Altars and the Museum of Russian Icons’ Icons & Retablos: Images of Devotion encourage visitors to compare these sacred paintings, not only within each altar space but also “across the aisle.”
Dr. Elizabeth Zarur holds a BFA in Printmaking and Drawing, an MFA in Fiber Arts, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Art. During her 30-year
career teaching art history at New Mexico State University and Wheaton College in Massachusetts, she published extensively and curated
several exhibitions. Her research focuses on the arts and culture of Latin America and Portugal with the publication of books and articles
on the nineteenth-century Mexican retablo, the colonial architecture and religious rituals of Brazil, women artists in baroque Portugal,
and the feather art of the Indians of Central Brazil. She has curated several national and international exhibitions accompanied by
comprehensive catalogs; and attended conferences and delivered lectures in Brazil, Portugal, Mexico, and the United States.
Icons & Retablos: The Blessings of Christ on Home Altars. The exhibition will be on view March 10 through August 26, 2023 in the UAM’s Margie and Bobby Rankin Retablo Gallery. More information about associated programming will be available on the UAM’s website. Click for more information
