Hiking Safety Tips

The perfect Hiking and Hospitality day for me starts with a mid-morning hike with my dog, Phoebe, at Soledad Canyon (I like to sleep in). We usually take the Bar Canyon loop to where it intersects with the Soledad Canyon trail, then continue on to the waterfall before heading back to the car. The entire hike takes us about 1.5 hours. After that, we head to Andele’s Dog House for some queso and tacos, and maybe a beer. If I have time, and if Phoebe isn’t worn out yet, we’ll walk around the Mesilla plaza and maybe catch some live music at Cafe Don Felix or Vintage Wines.

The perfect Hiking and Hospitality day kicks off with me grabbing some breakfast burritos at Santa Fe Grill then meeting up with friends for a hike at the Slot Canyon or Achenbach Canyon. Since me and whoever I’m hiking with tend to shoot photos along the way, we start early to give plenty of time for creative inspiration. Afterwards, we all head to High Desert Brewing Co. for drinks and nachos on the patio. If there’s time, a visit to the Farmers and Crafts Market of Las Cruces is always a great way round out the morning on Saturdays.

The perfect Hiking and Hospitality day starts with a Sunday morning hike at Baylor Canyon with my wife Karina. We start our journey early in the morning, the hike is around 6.3 miles round trip with spectacular views of the city and the Organ Mountains. The midpoint of the trail has a big rock area with an amazing view of the Mesilla Valley (I highly recommend stopping here). The entire hike takes about 3.5 hours. After the hike, it’s lunch time! For me and Karina, the best way to end our adventure is with a craft beer and the handmade New Mexico pizza from the Ice Box Tap Room on Main St.

The perfect Hiking and Hospitality day for the Herrera family begins with having breakfast at Zia Café.  Some of the family’s favorites include a bowl of posole and biscuits and gravy.  After filling up on delicious hometown food, we venture over to Slot Canyon where the easy 1.5 mile hike gives us some amazing views. The drive to and from is very pleasant and relaxing.  My family makes it a point to stop at Leasburg Dam State Park during the summertime to enjoy the water and additional small trails.  Upon returning to Las Cruces, it’s a must for us to stop by Caliche’s Frozen Custard and enjoy a sweet treat.
