About Spaceport America
As the nation’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, Spaceport America is designed with the needs of space tourism in mind. Unique geographic benefits, striking iconic design, and the tradition of New Mexico space leadership are coming together to create a new way to travel into space. The spaceport building is designed to convey the thrill of space travel while making a minimal impact on the environment. The low-lying, organic shape resembles a rise in the landscape, and will use local materials and regional construction techniques. The spaceport has been planned to achieve the prestigious LEED Platinum rating. A careful balance between accessibility and privacy is achieved, as visitors and astronauts enter the building through a deep channel cut in the landscape. The walls will form an exhibition area leading to a galleried level above the hangar that houses the spacecraft and on through to the terminal building. Natural light enters via skylights, with a glazed façade reserved for the terminal building, establishing a platform for spectacular views onto the runway. The building will provide a destination experience for visitors.
Location
Spaceport America is located about 60 miles north of Las Cruces off of Interstate 25. Future plans call for welcome centers to be located at two points along Interstate 25, one of which will be the hub of travel to and from the facility which will be located several miles east of the interstate.
Visitors Center
The Visitor Center is open daily from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm and is located at at 301 S. Foch St. in Truth or Consequences, NM. For more information call 1-844-7-2SPACE.
