Join us for a new retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Art, Gaspar Enríquez: Chicano Pride, Chicano Soul. Gaspar Enríquez is a nationally recognized Chicano artist from El Paso, Texas, who uses an airbrush to created hyper-realistic portraits. The exhibit is on view February 3 through May 6, 2023. There is an opening reception on February 3 from 5-7pm. Gaspar Enríquez will be in attendance and will offer a gallery tour at 5:30pm.
Gaspar Enríquez is a self-defined Chicano artist who has been at the forefront of the national Chicano art movement for over fifty years. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, he uses his hyper-realistic, airbrushed portraits to show the humanity of the El Paso Chicano community and the tensions they face when living in a two-culture environment. Enríquez’s Chicano heritage is a consistent thread that ties together his work, which reflects his life experiences, the urban environment, and the people of his hometown. His compassionate nature allows him to capture his subject’s humanity and forces the viewer to look deeply at his subjects.
Gaspar Enríquez was born in 1942 and raised in the Segundo Barrio of El Paso, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Art from University of Texas, El Paso in 1971 and a Master of Art from New Mexico State University in 1985. Enriquez was an art teacher at Bowie High School in El Paso for 32 years. Since his retirement, he has focused on his artwork and renovating adobe structures in the historic downtown of San Elizario, Texas. His artwork is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture, the El Paso Museum of Art, and other prominent institutions.
The museum is located at 491 N. Main St. and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday 9am to 4:30pm. There is no admission fee. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1. For additional information, visit the website at https://www.lascruces.gov/museums or call (575) 541-2137

What: The colorful, rich history of the “Mountain Pride” stagecoach is the subject of the next Culture Series presentation at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. In this slide presentation of historic photos from the archives of the Black Range Museum, Steve Dobrott visually relates his extensive research on the famous old stagecoach that once ran the Lake Valley, Hillsboro, and Kingston stage line from 1889 to 1916. The cast of characters includes J.W. Orchard and his infamous wife Sadie, who among others, were once co-owners of the stage line. The Hillsboro Historical Society is hoping to work out a long-term loan agreement to have the stagecoach exhibited at the newly refurbished Black Range Museum in Hillsboro. The stagecoach is currently at Lincoln Historic Site in Lincoln, N.M. Admission is free.
Who: Steve Dobrott of the Hillsboro Historical Society is the speaker for this lecture. Dobrott, past president and current board member of the Hillsboro Historical Society, managed Ted Turner’s Ladder Ranch in south-central New Mexico for 24 years. He stayed on to be the ambassador for Ted Turner Expeditions (now Ted Turner Reserves), an eco-tourism business, before retiring in Hillsboro. The Culture Series presentations are organized and hosted by the Friends of the Museum.
When: The presentation is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9.
Where: In the theater at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road in Las Cruces, N.M.
Why: The Friends of the Museum host these monthly Culture Series presentations to spark interest in New Mexico history and other various subjects. The “Mountain Pride” stagecoach played an important role in transportation in and around south-central New Mexico and has a rich history.

“Watercolor Pencils with Marie Siegrist, NMWS ” NM Watercolor Society Southern Chapter meeting Sunday, February 12, 2023
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
Good Samaritan Society’s Creative Arts Room, 3011 Buena Vida Circle, Las Cruces, NM.
Join us for a demonstration of watercolor pencil technique with award winning artist and longtime teacher Marie Siegrist, NMWS.
Watercolor pencils are a wonderful addition to a watercolorist’s “tool” kit. They are versatile in the studio and handy for field
work or travel when they only require paper, a couple of brushes and a small cup for water.
They can be used as an element in a watercolor painting, and for cleaning up edges. They can be used over a pen and ink or graphite drawing, or they can be used as a stand-alone medium to make a complete painting. Most importantly they are “just plain fun” to use!
We welcome the public to come to our meetings — hope to see you there!

DESCRIPTION: Have you ever wondered how the white sands formed? Take a tour to Lake Lucero with a ranger and learn about the formation of the sands and the special plants and animals that live in and around the dunes. These three-hour ranger-guided tours to the playa (dry lakebed) of Lake Lucero are offered once a month and reservations are required.
A special use fee is charged for the tour: $8.00 per person ages 16 and older, $4 for children. Federal recreation passes do not apply for this special tour.
DIFFICULTY OF THE HIKE- Moderate. The 1.5 mile round trip hike is through an arroyo and is not a maintained trail. The soil is loose and the terrain can be rough. This hike is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for those with impaired mobility.
The tour will begin at the Small Missile Range Gate intersection with US Highway 70, 25 miles west of White Sands National Park headquarters, between mileposts 174 and 175. The trip will return to the Small Missile Range Gate three hours after the start time.
Cameras are welcome on the tour but may not be used until we arrive at the trailhead and are inside the gate on monument land.
You will caravan in your own car from the gate to the trailhead (17.5 miles one way or 35 miles roundtrip). Have a full tank of gas before leaving home and a spare tire in case of a flat.
No sandals or open-toed shoes. Closed-toed shoes such as hiking boots or stout walking shoes are required.
The tour is three hours long, two of which will be outside. Bring snacks, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses for everyone in your group. Dress accordingly for the weather.
***At least a gallon of water per person is required, otherwise you will not be allowed to attend the tour. Water is essential! One or two 20-ounce bottles of water is not enough! Dehydration and heat exhaustion can set in incredibly fast, especially in the summer when temperatures can soar well above 100°F (38°C), and can quickly result in death. Yes, it is absolutely required and no, you do not have to carry the entire gallon but it is expected that you have at least 2 liters per person while walking to the lake bed. Rangers will NOT have extra water to give to visitors on the tour.***
The hike to the lake shore is 3/4 of a mile over rough terrain and loose soils. This tour is not wheelchair accessible.
Pets are welcome as long as they are friendly and remain on a leash.
Per missile range rules, no concealed carry weapons are allowed on the tour.
Possessing or removing any natural, cultural, Native American artifacts, paleontological and archaeological resources, including gypsum, selenite crystals is prohibited.

Our own NMSU Department of Art professor Tauna Cole will share her practice in this workshop highlighting breathwork as a source for visualizing imagery and using the medium of watercolors to create.
This workshop will demonstrate different breathing techniques to take us inside ourselves, bringing awareness to the body, allowing for deeper visualization. These moments will be an opportunity for demonstrating individuality, connection and creating images that can be considered a genuine expression of the moment. Tauna Cole’s own meditation work is on display in the University ArtMuseum’s newest show, “Together Through as Within.”

Event Description: Stop-motion film showing with Artist Talk Back (Peekaboo Pointe & Dr.
Lynn Sally) First come, first served.
PEEKSHOW features the mind-blowing stop-motion short films of renowned performance artist Peekaboo Pointe (NYC). Her films are melancholy and campy, taking head-on issues such as the aging female body, what it means to be a performing artist in a digital age, and her own personal struggles with fertility. As a queer multi-disciplinary artist,
Peekaboo Pointe’s work celebrates the unveiled female form as a site of agency and subjecthood.
PEEKSHOW includes a talk back between the artist Peekaboo Pointe and scholar Dr. Lynn Sally, author of Neo-Burlesque: Striptease as Transformation, currently teaching “Performing Gender: Camp, Drag & Burlesque” at NMSU.
