Trinity Site Open House Updated Guidance WSMR Public Affairs Office
September 23, 2021. ​White Sands Missile Range will open Trinity Site to the public after a brief pause in activities due to COVID-19 on Oct. 2. Trinity Site is where the world’s first atomic bomb was tested at 5:29:45 a.m. Mountain War Time July 16, 1945.

The open house is free and no reservations are required. At the site visitors can take a quarter-mile walk to ground zero where a small obelisk marks the exact spot where the bomb was detonated. Historical photos are mounted on the fence surrounding the area.

While at the site, visitors can also ride a missile range shuttle bus two miles from ground zero to the Schmidt/McDonald Ranch House. In order to comply with the New Mexico Governor COVID-19 mandates, masks must be worn while inside the buses and inside the ranch house. The ranch house is where the scientists assembled the plutonium core of the bomb. Visitors will also be able to experience what life was like for a ranch family in the early 1940s. In order to comply with the New Mexico Governor’s COVID-19 requirements, masks must be worn while inside the buses and inside the ranch house.

The simplest way to get to Trinity Site is to enter White Sands Missile Range through its Stallion Range Center gate. Stallion gate is five miles south of U.S. Highway 380. The turnoff is 12 miles east of San Antonio, New Mexico, and 53 miles west of Carrizozo, New Mexico. The nearest city to make hotel reservations is Socorro, New Mexico. The Stallion Gate is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors arriving at the gate between those hours will be allowed to drive unescorted the 17 miles to Trinity Site. The road is paved and marked. The site closes promptly at 3:30 p.m.

WSMR employees wanting to attend the Trinity Site Open House are not allowed to drive through the range, or they will be turned around. To get into the installation, employees must use one of the two options available to the general public, the Stallion Gate or with the Alamogordo Caravan.

Alamogordo: Due to the annual increase in the number of visitors to the Trinity Site Open Houses. The Alamogordo caravan is only open to the first 125 vehicles. The limit is necessary to maintain a safe environment enroute to Trinity Site. All others will have to enter the site through the Stallion Gate located off U.S. Highway 380, View directions here. The route is approximately the same time and distance as the caravan route.

Barbara Bush has had a long and circuitous journey to becoming a fulltime artist. Barbara studied art in college (Southern Methodist University) majoring in drawing and painting.

Jane Peacock, a native of El Paso, studied art at U.T.E.P. and is a lifelong painter. Jane has been a painter of portraits of people of the Borderland, and landscapes of New Mexico.

Wayne Suggs says “landscape photography is magical to me.” The renowned New Mexico photographer will share some of that magic with the Farm & Ranch Museum.

The Color of Dreams exhibit features 25 of Suggs’ most-recent photographs that are included in his book of the same title. His images capture the beautiful, rugged landscape of New Mexico. Whether the composition includes night skies, cacti, petroglyphs, boulders, or abandoned structures, Suggs’ photographs have a distinct feel and look.

“For 47 years, I’ve held a camera in my hand,” said Suggs, who has lived his whole life in Las Cruces. “My love and passion for the art of photography has continued to grow with each passing year. To return in my mind to that moment in time, and to remember the joy I felt when I pressed the shutter has made the photographs a part of who I am. I’m not in love with my photographs, I’m in love with all the experiences, the friends I’ve made, and most of all, being out in nature.”

The art show will be on display through Dec. 3, 2022.

Regular admission is required to see the rest of the Museum: $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, and $3 for children 4 to 17.

New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road.

Cleared for Takeoff examines over 100 years of regional aviation history, both military and civilian, in southern New Mexico, using photographs, oral histories, and historic objects. Starting with the introductory use of military airplanes in 1916 after Pancho Villa’s raid on Columbus, NM, the exhibition explores the local impact of aviation-related training programs offered through the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts during World War II and the post-war era.
It addresses the flourishing of civilian aviation in the 1950s–1960s, with the formation of flying clubs and shuttle airlines dotting southern New Mexico.
With the decline of leisure flying beginning in the 1980s, it notes the changing nature of local aviation in the 21st Century. Come learn more about aviation history in southern New Mexico.

“Icons and Symbols of the Borderland” at the Museum of Art
 Join us for a new exhibition at the Museum of Art, Icons and Symbols of the Borderland: Art from the U.S.-Mexico Crossroads, curated by Diana Molina and featuring over 80 pieces of artwork by 29 regional artists. Stylistically diverse and thematically varied, participating artists consider their complex cultural inheritance and reveal their points of view about the ever-shifting relationship between the United States and Mexico. Icons and Symbols of the Borderland is on view August 5 – October 15, 2022. Participating artists will lead a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, August 5.

Themes of the Environment, Sacred and Profane, the Frontier, and Foodways allow the artists to investigate the Mexican American, Anglo, and Indigenous experience and identity in the Borderlands. Broad in scope, the artists reference the region’s pre-Columbian past, its colonial influences, its Indigenous legacy, and contemporary geo-political tensions. Through their artwork, they present an enduring sense of struggle, sacrifice, and regeneration.

Several events are scheduled for this exhibit. The August 5 exhibit opening will have live music and participating artists on hand to discuss their artwork. Hands-on educational programs are scheduled for October 15.  The August 6 program features mask making and will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Exhibit artists Davinia Miraval and Miguel Valenzuela will conduct the mask making program. The October 15 program features print making and will also run 10 a.m. to noon. Exhibit artist Oscar Moya will conduct the print making program.

Icons and Symbols of the Borderland was curated by Diana Molina and features artwork by members of Juntos Art Association, based in El Paso, Texas.

The museum is located at 491 N. Main St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission fee. Mountain lion research in New Mexico is the subject of the next Culture Series at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. The “Big Cats of New Mexico” presentation at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13 is organized and hosted by the Friends of the Museum. Admission is free. Dr. Travis Perry, a biology professor at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., will talk about his New Mexico mountain lion research, meaningful outdoor education, and creating a field station in the Gila National Forest. In 2021, Dr. Perry founded National Curiosity, a nonprofit based in Hillsboro, N.M. that created the station for hands-on education, back-country skills, and conservation research in the Gila.

What: Culture Series presentation titled “Big Cats of New Mexico.”

Who: Organized and hosted by the Friends of the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. The speaker is Dr. Travis Perry.

“Icons and Symbols of the Borderland” at the Museum of Art
 Join us for a new exhibition at the Museum of Art, Icons and Symbols of the Borderland: Art from the U.S.-Mexico Crossroads, curated by Diana Molina and featuring over 80 pieces of artwork by 29 regional artists. Stylistically diverse and thematically varied, participating artists consider their complex cultural inheritance and reveal their points of view about the ever-shifting relationship between the United States and Mexico. Icons and Symbols of the Borderland is on view August 5 – October 15, 2022. Participating artists will lead a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, August 5.

Themes of the Environment, Sacred and Profane, the Frontier, and Foodways allow the artists to investigate the Mexican American, Anglo, and Indigenous experience and identity in the Borderlands. Broad in scope, the artists reference the region’s pre-Columbian past, its colonial influences, its Indigenous legacy, and contemporary geo-political tensions. Through their artwork, they present an enduring sense of struggle, sacrifice, and regeneration.

Several events are scheduled for this exhibit. The August 5 exhibit opening will have live music and participating artists on hand to discuss their artwork. Hands-on educational programs are scheduled for October 15 (call for time). The August 6 program features mask making and will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Exhibit artists Davinia Miraval and Miguel Valenzuela will conduct the mask making program. The October 15 program features print making and will also run 10 a.m. to noon. Exhibit artist Oscar Moya will conduct the print making program.

Icons and Symbols of the Borderland was curated by Diana Molina and features artwork by members of Juntos Art Association, based in El Paso, Texas.

The museum is located at 491 N. Main St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission fee. The Doña Ana Arts Council will host “Portrait Tour” by award-winning artist and portraitist Bob Diven on Saturday, October 22, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m..

In addition to being an artist and a painter, Bob Diven, who was selected as one of the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership’s first-ever artists in residence in 2020, is an actor, playwright, composer, singer, author, and set builder. As a set builder, one of the things Diven is known for is as the designer of “Magellan the Dragon,” the mascot of the Renaissance ArtsFaire, produced annually by the Doña Ana Arts Council. He also is a cartoonist who creates editorial cartoons for the Sunday Las Cruces Sun-News. A book of these cartoons, “Living in Las Cruces, The Editorial Cartoons of Bob Diven,” was published in 2020.

For “Portrait Tour,” Diven will take the audience on a journey through a selection of 19th and 20th Century portraits from some of the great art collections in Paris, Cambridge, London, Dublin, and Chicago. A few of the portraits to be discussed during the “Tour” include “American Gothic” by Grant Wood, “Self Portrait” by Frédéric Bazille, and “Portrait of Madame Flandrin” by Hippolyte Flandrin.

The “Portrait Tour,” a free event, will be held at the Doña Ana Arts Council, 250 West Amador, Suite B, in Las Cruces on October 22, promptly at 4 PM.
Diven will follow the presentation with a question and answer session open to all members of the audience.

Instruction will provide a fun and interesting format using a step-by-step tutorial while painting and sipping on Boba tea. Supplies and tea will be provided for the fee of $9 per person, per class.

This program will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. starting Sept. 23 at the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center, 304 W. Bell Ave.
