In this exhibit, you will learn about women’s clothing from the pioneer days of the 1870s to the Depression Era of the 1930s. The exhibit focuses on clothing worn for “everyday” as well as special events like weddings, funerals, and baptism. Under garments are included, as well as accessories such as hats and gloves. Lots of dresses and lots of historic photographs.

Event Description:  Feed Your Mind, an arts and cultural seminar series, is a new initiative for the Doña Ana Arts Council, bringing knowledgeable speakers on a wide range of topics to the community. Kathleen Key will be the first speaker, giving three presentations entitled, “New Mexico Art, Past to Present.” On February 15. Key will talk about art in the Mesilla Valley, featuring current local artists.

Saddles and saddle makers are an important part of ranching history in New Mexico and the Southwest. The saddle was the most critical tool of the cowboy; it was one of the most expensive purchases he would make, so he wanted a good, durable saddle that was specific to the work he was doing – whether it was riding the range on a cattle drive, roping and branding calves, or at the rodeo. Cowboys sought out particular saddle makers for their custom orders and based their selections on the makers’ reputations for making exactly what the cowboy needed and used. It would be impossible to talk about all of the important saddle makers in the Southwest. Instead, we will focus on four individuals whose saddles are representative of the many well-known southwestern saddle makers.

This exhibit also provides a leather-stamping activity for children.

Yvonne is a member of several art associations and studied locally.  She is primarily an oil landscape painter.  The love of art has been a constant passion and after retiring in 1989 she pursued her love of art.

Mike, originally from Washington, D.C. graduated with a degree in Business Administration from the American University.  After retirement, Mike took workshops in photography and reed basket making.  While still interested in photography he has become self-taught making lariat baskets.

In addition, the 30 artists of the Gallery offer art in various media, which include original paintings, oil, acrylics, pastels, watercolors, fused glass art jewelry, unique one of a kind woodturnings, stained glass, photography, ceramics, mixed media, unusual decorated gourds, handmade textile weavings, art tile, affordable quality natural gemstone jewelry, handcrafted basket weavings, pencil, charcoal and ink drawings, prints, cards and miniature paintings.

“Drawn to the Land: Peter Hurd’s New Mexico” features 24 paintings and some of the artist’s belongings, including one of his palettes, a pair of chaps, sombrero, guitar, and polo helmet and mallet.

The show, which includes loans from the Hurd La Rinconada Gallery in San Patricio, N.M., and the El Paso Museum of Art, also features a video about Hurd (1904-1984).

Having taught in the Dona Ana Community Education program for over 30 years and in other community programs, Jan Archey has taught many adults and children in the Las Cruces area. Her personal work is varied exploring many styles and techniques. Jan loves to make functional ware and finds great pleasure knowing her work will become part of special family celebrations. Currently she is working on a series of wall ‘paintings.’  Using minerals, sands and mud from the earth, she is exploring using these materials as ‘paints.’  Her work often consists of a variety of firing techniques from raku to wood-fired ceramics.
Patricia Grace started her art education as an oil painting student in the late 90’s while working full time at White Sands Missile Range. After working with oil paint for several years, she decided to delve into ceramics and signed up for a class with Jan Archey in 2004, and by 2009 she began taking sculpture classes. Her work combines these elements of her training to create a unique dimension in her pieces. Patricia’s ceramic tiles for this exhibit are an interpretation of the Organ Mountains, including the animals that inhabit them, that try to capture the essence of the landscape.

The Las Cruces Museum of Art will present the artistic culture of the Gee’s Bend Quilters, followed by an activity with all materials provided by the museum, at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019.

The Gee’s Bend Quilters are from Boykin, Alabama, a predominantly African-American community along the Alabama River. They, and have been creating quilts since the 1920s. Drawing inspiration from family history, cultural trends, and improvisation, the artists craft their quilts from recycled cloth to produce one-of-a-kind works of art.

The work of four members of the Gee’s Bend Quilters – Louisiana Bendolpf, Mary Lee Bendolph, Loretta Bennett, and Loretta Pettway – are featured in the Personal to Political: Celebrating the African American Artists of Paulson Fontaine Press exhibition, on display at the Museum of Art from May 10 to July 20, 2019. Their featured artwork includes quilts and prints of their quilt designs.

The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical drama film produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, with Richard Haydn and Eleanor Parker. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 stage musical of the same name, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film’s screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical’s book by Lindsay and Crouse. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg, Austria in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children.[4] After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.
