The New Horizons Symphony will present its winter concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 24 at the NMSU Atkinson Recital Hall in Las Cruces. The program will be led by newly appointed music director and conductor Jorge Martinez-Rios, associate professor at NMSU. The concert is free and open to the public.
The program will highlight the talents of the NMSU Music Department’s string program. Simón Gollo, NMSU assistant professor of violin and member of La Catrina String Quartet, will perform the lyrical Thais Meditation by Massenet and Zigeunerweisen (also known as Gypsy Airs) by Sarasate. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante will feature Amalia Zeitlin on violin and Julio Campos on viola. Zeitlin is working on her master’s degree and Campos just completed his.
Also on the program are Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri Overture and the ever-popular Mars and Jupiter movements from Holst’s The Planets.
New Horizons Symphony in Las Cruces is a nonprofit organization and member of New Horizons International Music Association which provides musical opportunities for adults. The orchestra gives three concerts a year and rehearses Thursday evenings in the NMSU Band Room.

Event Description: The NMSU Philharmonic and the Orquesta Sinfónica Esperanza Azteca Cd Juárez merge to offer two great concerts entitled “Music Beyond Borders” an initiative led by the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso, Maestro Simon Gollo of NMSU, Maestro Jové García of OSEA, and the association “Amigos de la Orquesta Sinfónica Esperanza Azteca Cd. Juárez”.
This event aims to strengthen the cultural relationship between both countries and the academic exchange between one of the most important universities in the state (NMSU) and one of the most relevant social-musical projects in Mexico: The Youth Orchestra of Ciudad Juarez, one of 83 orchestras part of the Esperanza Azteca program managed by the Salinas foundation.
Over 100 musicians on stage conducted by Simon Gollo and Jove Garcia will perform pieces such as the “New World” Symphony by Dvorak, Danzón No. 2 by Márquez, Summertime by Gershwin, and more.
“Music Beyond Borders” is an event to highlight the importance of seeing life and music beyond any border and encourage artistic exchange in our region.
