Julie Alpert and Andy Arkley present new installation, sculpture, drawing, and interactive video. Each artist utilizes various forms of light and shadow (projected, reflected, and emitted) to evoke a nostalgic, playful, dramatic mood. They each use light to draw attention to their invented visual language of signs and symbols abstracted from childhood memories. Alpert’s use of everyday materials and her repetition of hearts, chains, hashtags, drips, and friendship bracelets refer to high fashion, teenage doodling in the margins of notebooks, the keepsakes she made and traded at summer camp, and the inevitable decay of all things. Arkley’s work encourages a childlike sense of discovery and strives to foster inclusion, positivity, and elation.

Geography Club at the Branigan Cultural Center.
Join the Branigan Cultural Center every Saturday from 10am to 12pm as we encourage families to take a mental road trip to explore culturally significant and historical sites within the Land of Enchantment! Each month we will focus on one location of historic and cultural significance in New Mexico, discussing the people, landscape, and environment of the area.
For the month of February, join us as we learn about the Gila Wilderness! Located north of Silver City, NM, the Gila Wilderness was designated as the nation’s first wilderness area in 1924. The wilderness is approximately 27 miles from north to south, and 39 miles east to west. It is home to various predators, mammals, birds, and reptiles. Join us and discover the inner explorer in you!
Admission is free to the Branigan Cultural Center, located at 501 North Main Street. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm, and Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. For addition information call (575) 541-2154.

Well-known comedian, film and television star George Lopez will receive the “Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Award” during the 2019 annual Las Cruces International Film Festival, presented by New Mexico State University and Visit Las Cruces Feb. 20-24.
Lopez will receive the award at a VIP reception Thursday, Feb. 21 followed by a screening of his film “The Chicano” at 7 p.m. that evening at Allen Theatres Cineport 10. Lopez recently finished shooting the film “Walking With Herb” in Las Cruces with Edward James Olmos and Kathleen Quinlan. He is currently starring in “River Runs Red,” the LCIFF Opening Night Film, with Taye Diggs, John Cusack, Luke Hemsworth and RJ Mitte.
The Festival’s executive director Ross Marks points to the event as not only a boon to the local economy, but also a way to highlight southern New Mexico’s place in the state’s $500 million film industry. Marks, an accomplished film director whose most recent project, “Walking with Herb,” was filmed in Las Cruces, is a professor with NMSU’s Creative Media Institute.

Extreme Conservation on a Glacier-less Planet – Brought to you by New Mexico State University
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Joel Berger: Professor Berger is the Barbara Cox Anthony University Chair in Wildlife Conservation at Colorado State University where he uses principles of behavioral and applied ecology to study and save species endangered by human encroachment and global change. His work takes him to the ends of the Earth and beyond as he studies takin and wild yaks in Bhutan and China, saiga antelope in Mongolia, musk ox and polar bears in the Arctic of Alaska and Russia, pronghorn in western North America, and black rhinos in Namibia and Zimbabwe. One of the central drivers of his research is to preserve the spectacular biodiversity of our Earth and find ways of sustaining both it and us. He has published 6 books, his most recent “Extreme Conservation: Life at the Edges of the World” was recently reviewed in the New York Review of Books and Nature, one of the premier scientific journals. He has also published 93 peer-reviewed articles in a wide variety of scientific venues. Concessions served including snacks, refreshments, beer, wine, and spirits.

The incredible true story of how boundary-shattering New England astronomer Henrietta Leavitt trades with comforts of her rural home for a job at the Harvard Observatory in Massachusetts. Her ambition leaves both her family and her new colleagues (women knows simply as “computers”) perplexed. But with a single discovery, their views of themselves, each other, and the universe itself will be upended for all time. An incredible story of bold love, boundless determination, and the vast grandeur of the cosmos – an unparalleled treat for the heart, mind, and senses.

Tombaugh Day at Museum of Nature & Science.
The Museum of Nature & Science will host “Tombaugh Day” from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, February 23. This is a free, family event that is open to the public.
Every year the museum honors the work of local astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. This year’s event will include a special presentation from Tombaugh’s son, Alden Tombaugh, at 10 a.m. Alden Tombaugh will discuss the lifetime works of his father, including his discovery of Pluto and contributions to the development of research centers in southern New Mexico. At 11 a.m., Solar System Ambassador and NASA IT Specialist Richard Pacheco will talk about how astronomers create color images to interpret data from astronomic investigations.
Apache Point Observatory will join the event this year with the NMSU Astronomy Department and Museum of Nature & Science, providing hands-on activities and demonstrations for all ages. Solar observation telescopes will be set up at the main entrance to the museum at 411 N. Main Street for safe viewing of the sun. Astronomers of all ages and abilities are invited to attend.
Admission to the Museum of Nature & Science is free. The museum is located at 411 North Main Street and is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4;30 p.m. on Saturday.
