The Museum opens a new exhibit featuring more than 40 objects from its collections that combine usefulness and beauty. Some objects are purely utilitarian in nature, with no real aesthetic appeal. At the other end of the spectrum are objects of art, which serve no functional purpose other than to be appreciated for their beauty, or the message the artist wishes to convey.  Somewhere in the middle are those things that have a definite purpose, but which also exhibit a deliberate sense of style. That’s what the objects in this exhibit have in common.

It includes everything from woven items such as Navajo rugs to Apache and Pima baskets, to vases, pots and bowls, as well as saddles, guns, and furniture.

The exhibit will be in the Museum’s Legacy Gallery through July 8, 2018.

Bert Gammill paints in watercolor, oil, pastel and pencil. A Texas native, she studied art at Texas Christian University and UT at Arlington. She received her BFA from NMSU and taught high school art for 12 years.

Anne Carter has been creating with oil and acrylic paints for more than forty years and has a preference for portraits and landscape subjects.

In this exhibit, you will learn about women’s clothing from the pioneer days of the 1870s to the Depression Era of the 1930s. The exhibit focuses on clothing worn for “everyday” as well as special events like weddings, funerals, and baptism. Under garments are included, as well as accessories such as hats and gloves. Lots of dresses and lots of historic photographs.

April 7 at 11 am: Discuss the team who created Hamilton and summarize its massive impact on our culture. April 14 at 11 am: Analyze the choreography and design elements of sequences of the musical. April 21 at 11 am: Examine several songs through a feminist perspective. April 28 at 11 am:   Discuss other aspects of the musical’s storytelling as requested in the prior three lectures. The four-part Hamilton lecture series will be April 7, April 14, April 21 and April 28 from 11 am – 1 pm with a cost of $50 for all four presentations.

Changing the World, One Wall at a Time, a documentary feature film on Education Is Not A Crime – one of the world’s largest street art and human rights campaigns, which raises awareness of education discrimination by Iran’s government against tens of thousands of Baha’is – is now available.

The film features interviews with popular artists – such as Rone from Australia, Astro from France, Marthalicia Matarrita from New York, and Elle from Los Angeles – as well as activists with experience of the Civil Rights movement, the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa, and human rights work on behalf of Iranians of all backgrounds. Iranian Baha’is with personal experience of being denied their right to higher education also share their stories.

Benjy Rivas is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in the Americana genre, creating and performing songs in both English and Spanish. Rivas has been performing professionally since the late 1970s. After moving to southern New Mexico early nineties, Rivas played solo and with various groups including Tierra Chicana, Roadhouse, Benjy Rivas & the BBR Band, Los Agaveros Del Norte, Loaded Guns, Dos Amigos, and The Note Knockers, and was the host and DJ for KRWG’s The Back Porch for seven years.  Concessions served including snacks, refreshments, beer, and wine.

Learn about the role that trains played in our history, and meet re-enactors to discover first-hand what it was like to live and work in the early 20th century.
