This outstanding exhibit explores the dramatic transformation of life in the Tularosa Basin in the 1940s and beyond.
“Home on the Range: From Ranches to Rockets” stretches through two galleries and is on display until further notice.
Visitors will learn about ranch life in the Tularosa Basin during the early 20th century, and how events taking place halfway around the world brought about changes that for many ranchers were permanent. The area eventually became White Sands Missile Range, drawing some of the world’s greatest minds in science and engineering.

The New Mexico Colonial Home was built in the museum’s Heritage Gallery and is the centerpiece of the Spanish Colonial section of the gallery. New Mexico’s Spanish Colonial period was from 1598 — when the Spanish first settled in the region — to 1821. The time period for the home is 1815.
Like two other structures in the museum’s 20,000-square-foot gallery — Home Sweet Home and the Mercantile – the New Mexico Colonial Home is an exhibition that allows visitors to walk through, giving them a feeling of stepping back in time.
The home is made of adobe plaster and lots of wood, in the form of posts, vigas, latillas, corbels and lintels, that gives the structure an authentic, traditional look. It includes two rooms – a living room and courtyard, or placita.

Wheels & Gears is a long-term exhibit in the Museum’s Heritage Gallery that features a collection of wagons, buggies, vehicles and implements from different eras in New Mexico.
“To see such a variety of items with wheels and gears together, all of which have contributed in some way to New Mexico’s agricultural history, is so interesting and exciting because you relate to how ‘getting around in New Mexico’ has really changed over the years,” said the museum’s Chief Curator, Toni Laumbach.
The exhibit features:
• Carreta wheel hub (1840-1850) made of cottonwood that was discovered half-buried along the northern edge of what is now White Sands National Monument
• 1936 half-ton International Harvester pickup truck
• 1924 Model T Roadster
• Gasoline pump that dates to the 1920s
• Delivery wagon from 1895
• 1900 buckboard wagon used on a ranch near Grants, N.M.

Bataan 2021 to be a Virtual Event
The 32nd annual Bataan Memorial Death March will be hosted virtually for the first time in event history.
Marchers will be able to participate anytime between April 9 and April 18, 2021.
The decision by White Sands Missile Range to host the event virtually allows leadership to keep COVID19 safety the top priority for participants, volunteers, staff and community supporters. It also gives participants the flexibility to choose a date and route that works best for them, while honoring the
memory of World War II heroes. On April 9, 1942 tens of thousands of American and Filipino soldiers were surrendered to Japanese
forces and were forced to march more than 60 miles in the scorching heat though the Philippine jungles.
Thousands died and those who survived faced the hardships of prisoner of war camps.
The Bataan Memorial Death March is a challenging and grueling march that tests both mental and
physical abilities. For the 2021 virtual experience, marchers are encouraged to choose a challenging
stretch of road or trail in honor of the historical march. Marchers can choose between the full 26.2 mile
marathon length or a 14.2 mile honorary distance.
The March officially kicks off on April 9, 2021, and participants may choose any day between April 9 and
April 18, 2021 to complete their mileage. The March must be completed in one day. Returning marchers
will find they will only need to select their distance for the 2021 March, as multiple categories are not
necessary in a virtual environment. Event organizers still encourage participants to march in their own
way, to include in uniform or with a “ruck” if desired and safe.
The registration fee includes a Bataan Marcher T-Shirt, Marcher Bib, Commemorative Dog Tag, and a
Participation Medal. As with all virtual fitness events, the March is based on the honor system. Event
organizers will not be tracking finishing times, instead focusing on the memorial aspect of the event.
More details on the opening date for registration and pricing will be announced soon via website and
social media. Please follow the Bataan Memorial Death March Facebook page and
www.bataanmarch.com for future announcements.
