Folks and Fixin’s: Making Food in Time

New Mexico Farm & Ranch Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road.
Monday - Saturday 9 am - 5 pm, Sunday 12 noon - 5 pm.  A new exhibit at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum gives visitors a look into the different ways people have prepared their meals over time in New Mexico.  The exhibit is based in part on the book “New Mexico Farms and Ranches: Folks & Fixin’s, compiled by Sunny Conley and published by the museum in 2001. Puebloan people were the first to practice agriculture in the land known today as New Mexico. The Native Americans of New Mexico prepared food simply, but it took them much time. Women used a mano and metate to grind corn, then cooked cornmeal cakes over an open fire.  When Juan de Oñate and his colonizers moved into the northern fringes of New Spain in 1598, they brought many new foods with them. Cowboys and sheep and goat herders in the 1800s worked long, hard days out on the range. On trail drives that lasted for weeks, a male cook prepared meals at the camp with only the supplies brought with him. The meals New Mexicoans eat today are the result of centuries of introducing new foods and ideas in food preparation.  This remains a land of many diverse cultures, and our meals reflect this amazing diversity.  $5 adults, $3 seniors (60 and over), $2 children (5 - 17), 4 and under free. 505-522-4100. www.frhm.org

Peter Hurd's Mural Exhibit

New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road.  Monday - Saturday 9 am - 5 pm, Sunday noon - 5 pm.  A critical step for muralists is the drawing of charcoal studies.  Their purpose is to prepare a scaled rendering that allows the artist to work out perspectives, proportions and the size of the actual mural.  Hurd (1904 - 1984), a native of Roswell, created the mural in 1952.  In a letter prior to creating the artwork, Hurd described his concept for the piece this way: "(The Mural) would represent many human activities upon our great southwestern background - activities such as types of farming, stockraising, habitation - and finally in overall picture it would stress...various aspects of the use, control and conservation of water and land". Hurd's distinctive style and the use of southwestern subject matter brought him great prominence and fame, which continues today, two decades after his passing.  Architects, magazine editors, art connoisseurs, a president and a Saudi king sought out Hurd during his career for commissioned works.  $5 adults, $3 senior citizens (60 and over), $2 for children ages 5 - 17, 4 and under free.  505-522-4100. http://www.frhm.org
