beautiful: the Works of Michael Ponce at the Branigan Cultural Center
| The Branigan Cultural Center presents beautiful, an exhibition of the works of Michael Ponce. This display of paintings and drawings begins on Friday, July 6, 2012 and concludes on Saturday, August 25, 2012. A reception with the artist takes place at the Branigan Cultural Center from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, Friday, July 6 during the monthly Ramble. A native of Las Cruces, Mr. Ponce studied at New York’s Art Students’ League and at the Fashion Institute of Technology where he received his B.F.A. and began a career in commercial fashion art. He soon, however, became more interested in fine art and resumed his studies at the New York Academy of Art and at Oxford University. As he progressed, he incorporated his study of anatomy and his understanding of the human body into his riveting art work. In 2004, he was awarded the “Bruce Stevenson Memorial Award for Portrait” by The National Arts Club of New York City. According to Mr. Ponce, his thirst for knowledge of classical painting was so strong that he “…didn’t stop until I could do it.” This talent has progressed to such a high level that he paints “…right on the canvas, going back and forth between foreground, middle-ground and background so they are seamless.” While Michael Ponce studied the masters, he has the remarkable ability to blend his knowledge of classicism with modernism to create luminous works of art. They are beautiful. The Branigan Cultural Center is located at 501 North Main Street. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 4:30pm. For more information, contact the Branigan Cultural Center at (575) 541-2154 or visit the Center’s website at las-cruces.org/museums. |
Summer Exhibitions at the Las Cruces Museum of Art
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Three summer exhibitions open at the Las Cruces Museum of Art on Friday, June 1, 2012. Featured exhibits include Lynn Wiley’s “Where is the Stopping Place” “Chicanismo” by Gabriel Perez, and “A Surprising Similitude in Mud and Paper” with works by Sara D’Alessandro and Harriet Russell. A reception for the artists will be held on Friday, June 1, 2012 from 5 to 7pm during the monthly Ramble. The exhibits close on Saturday, July 21, 2012.
Now a resident of Las Cruces, Lynn Wiley’s large-scale watercolors are derived from her study of the ocotillo cactus. The images are without ornamentation so that they can be seen “as directly as possible …as you would see a landscape.” Ms. Wiley’s works have been featured in numerous exhibitions.
Gabriel Perez, a native of Roswell, NM, who now resides in Las Cruces and Albuquerque, uses his southern New Mexico upbringing as a source for his art. His large and small scale works in the exhibit “Chicanismo” revolve around his “surveys of tacos and burgers” that “…in a light-hearted way examine the concepts of Chicanismo or Mexican-American culture.”
Sara D’Alessandro and Harriet Russell are artists who work in different media creating similar images. Ms. D’Alessandro’s works in clay are “…imbued with highly developed textures and patterns” while Ms. Russell uses “…paper, inks and paints to create and compose surreal images that come alive…”

Gilpin experimented with every subject and photographic technique for over 55 years before receiving widespread national recognition for it. She answers questions and tells some of the behind-the-camera stories about the photographic retrospective that parallels her life.
