Event Details
Traditionally, Spanish Colonial furniture types were limited and included chests, tables, low stools, and cabinets. This was largely due to the flexibility of adobe homes where projecting surfaces could be constructed to serve as banquettes and benches, or recessed areas as niches or shelving. Once Anglo Americans arrived, a wider variety of furniture styles could be found including desks, bed frames, bookcases, and side tables.
“Wood for Wood: The WPA and Spanish Colonial Style Furniture” addresses the history of furniture manufacturing in New Mexico and its use in a WPA vocational program.
